CASL rules for automated follow-up
Automated follow-up by text or email only works if consent is on record. Here is what CASL expects from each message.
Automated follow-up by text or email depends on consent. In Canada, CASL sets the rules for commercial electronic messages, and PIPEDA sits beside it for how personal information is collected and used.
What CASL expects
- Consent before the message is sent, express or implied, with a record of how it was obtained
- Identification of who is sending the message
- A working unsubscribe that is honoured
How this shapes follow-up
A follow-up sequence starts only when consent is on record for that channel. Every message names your firm. An opt-out stops the sequence and is recorded against the contact. Replies that need a person go to your team.
This note is general information, not legal advice. Your firm remains responsible for its own compliance decisions.

Bring one recent month of inquiries to a 30-minute strategy call. You leave with a written list of where you lose people. The list is yours to keep, even if we never work together.
