PIPEDA and client data in AI tools

PIPEDA asks what personal information you collect, why, where it sits, and who can see it. A tool that cannot answer those questions does not belong in intake.
Cover image

PIPEDA is about accountability. A firm collecting personal information should be able to say what it collects, why, where it is stored, and who can access it.

Pasting an inquiry into a consumer AI tool with no agreement and no control over retention makes those questions hard to answer.

Questions to ask about any intake tool

  • Where is the data stored, and in which country?
  • Which third parties process it, and under what agreement?
  • How long is it kept, and who can delete it?
  • Is it used to train anyone's model?

How we handle it

Screening collects what your firm needs to decide on a matter, for a purpose the person is told. Access is limited to the people and providers who need it. If a tool cannot tell us where the data sits and who processes it, we keep it out of the intake path.

This note is general information, not legal advice. Your firm remains responsible for its own privacy decisions.
